reactivation - restoration - renovation

“Gamla málfundarhúsið” is a house in the small village Borðeyri. In the mid 19th century Borðeyri was one of the main trading ports in Iceland with flourishing life. The times have changed. Now, as an outsider one does feel like the village is in a state of hibernation, waiting for the right conditions to rise and prosper. The nourishment for a village like this comes from people’s spirit and activities and that is a guiding light in this project. Social sustainability is a keyword as well, knowing that this development will not succeed if not for the infrastructure that this small society maintains. Therefore this project has to remain active and get a life on its own. The house is about 100 years old and was originally made as a community centre and served as such the first few decades, then the hall was divided into smaller rooms as the building was changed to a single-family house. The intention is to revitalize the house, intertwine the idea of the community centre and an artist residency. I hope that this project will be a step in the right direction and will continue to support the sensitive community of Borðeyri.
